Discount Drug Mart, a Medina based chain of 73 stores, plans to construct a $3 million, 28,000 square-foot facility on South Defiance Street, Steve Ferris, governmental and public affairs director, confirmed Monday.
The building is set to open July 1, 2019, but that date is subject to change. The store might open prior to that.
Ferris said the company plans to build at 705 South Defiance Street, in the vacant lot west of St. John’s Christian Church.
“It’s a great site. We’re excited,” Ferris said.
When completed, the store will employ 35 full-time equivalent workers, he said. Full-time equivalent, or FTE, counts the number of full-time staff, then adds the number of hours part-time employees work divided by 40 hours a week.
Donna Dettling, Archbold village administrator, said Village Council granted a pre-approval to the firm for property tax abatement under the Community Reinvestment Act program.
In a summary sheet, Drug Mart officials say the mission of the firm is to “provide a high-quality shopping experience with a wide variety of products and services.
“Discount Drug Mart offers low prices and superior customer services with all the convenience of one-stop shopping in a neighborhoodfocused environment.”
In addition to a pharmacy and over-the-counter medications, the stores offer groceries and fresh produce, a deli, health & beauty supplies, paint and hardware, automotive supplies, and general merchandise.
Ferris said the company recently merged with another company to provide durable medical equipment such as canes, walkers, hospital beds, and wheelchairs.
Discount Drug Mart stores are only found in Ohio. While most are clustered in Northeast Ohio, there are stores in Dayton and Columbus.
Ferris said the Archbold store will be the farthest westward expansion for the company.
