Dowdy Pleased With First 2010 Farmers Market

After the first Farmers Market of 2010, Marsha Dowdy, director of the Archbold Area Chamber of Commerce, said chamber offi cials are pleased with the results.

“The vegetables are a little behind this year, given all the rain and strange weather we’ve had,” she said.

“Many of the producers didn’t have as much to bring.”

But even so, there was a nice selection of vegetables and baked goods.

“Three of the six vendors sold out. The other three sold 80% to 90% of what they had,” she said.

Attendance at the first Farmers Market “was steady. I don’t think that at any time we were swamped. Vendors always had a customer.”

Jay Budde, a demonstration chef, “did an amazing salad,” she said. He kept busy during the afternoon.

The Farmers Market is held each Thursday from 3 to 6 pm through Sept. 30, on Depot Street in the Downtown Historic District.

“We’re excited, because we have two more vendors who signed up for next week,” she said.

There are seven seasonal vendors who signed up and paid for booth space in the market for the entire season.

There is also one vendor who signed up for a month when his produce becomes available.

Add to that the weekly vendors who come in one week at a time, sometimes after discovering they’ve planted too much of something in their home gardens, and can’t possibly eat it all.

“With the weekly vendors, it almost doubles to 15 to 16 vendors a week,” she said.
