Chad Rufenacht, an Archbold High School senior, and Jordan Cowell, an AHS freshman, advanced to the Division III state tournament next weekend in Columbus.
Rufenacht (145 lbs.) finished second at the district tournament at Owens Community College. He lost a 4-1 decision to Elmwood’s Alex Betts in the finals.
Rufenacht started the tournament by pinning Tiffin Calvert’s Jacob Bowers in 29 seconds. In the quarterfinal he won a 5-3 decision over South Central’s Anthony Ferber. Rufenacht pinned Hicksville’s Wes Schooley at 1:51 in the semifinal.
Cowell (130 lbs.) finished third at the district with a 10-3 decision over Delta’s Tyler Yant in the match for third and fourth places. He started the tournament with a 4-0 decision over Ontario’s Jacob Miller. In the quarterfinal he won a 9-7 overtime decision over Elmwood’s Nic Hernandez. Cowell was pinned by Monroeville’s Cam Tessari at 2:31 in the semifinal, dropping him down to the consolation semifinal, where he pinned Seneca East’s Tyler Crapo in 2:49.
TJ Weirauch (112 lbs.), a sophomore, won his first round match with a 4-3 decision over Mohawk’s Kyle Parker. He lost an 8-1 deicision to Edison’s Tim Majoy in the quarterfinal to drop him to the second consolation, where he pinned Liberty Center’s Ben Martinez at 2:32. In the third consolation he won an 8-5 decision over Carey’s Eddie Fredritz. Weirauch lost a 13-8 decision to McComb’s Jacob Haas in the consolation semifinal, putting him into a battle to finish fifth or sixth.
Weirauch won a 14-6 major decision over Otsego’s Kodie Glosser to finish fifth at district.
Trevor Meyer (135 lbs.), a senior, lost his first round match, a 9-4 decision, to Genoa’s Scott Traver. Dropping down to the first consolation round, he pinned Crestview’s Jake Hedrick at 4:07. In the second consolation Meyer won a 12-8 decision over LC’s Chris Rentschler. In the third consolation he won a 16-12 overtime decision over McComb’s Chris Osborne.
Meyer lost a 12-4 major decision to Mohawk’s Devin Cartwright in the consolation semifinal. In the battle for fifth, he lost a 5-0 decision to South Central’s Payton Oney.
Fidler (171 lbs.), a senior in his first year of wrestling, was pinned by Monroeville’s Chris Phillips in his first-round match at 1:43. Phillips is the defending 171-lb. state champion.
Fidler’s district tournament ended in the first consolation when he lost a 5-1 decision to Port Clinton’s Raymond Hopfinger.
Archbold finished ninth at district with 58 points. Monroeville won the district team title with 139.5. Delta finished fourth with 109.–Posted 2.28, 11:30 p.m.
