Coldwater scored five points in the last 13.8 seconds to hand Archbold its only loss of the season, 35-34, in a Div. III district boys basketball semifinal at Lima Senior, Thursday, March 7.
The Streaks (23-1) struggled in the contest, as they were down 10-4 after one and 22-13 at the half.
Archbold outscored the Cavaliers 22-6 in the third to close the gap to 28-24 after three after tying the score at 23 with 3:07 left in the period.
The Streaks took their first lead of the contest, 32-30, with 3:42 left in the fourth. A pair of Rigo Ramos free throws with 1:35 remaining extended the difference to 34-30, setting the scene for the wild finish.
Jacob Wenning’s three-pointer with 13.8 seconds left closed the Cavs within one, 34-33. Cole Frilling stole the ball on Archbold’s inbounds pass and sank a bucket with 9 seconds left, giving Coldwater the 35-33 lead.
Archbold’s last-second shot was off the mark, and the Cavaliers got the upset over the top-ranked Streaks.
