Dick Selgo Named AHS Baseball Coach

Dick Selgo, Jr., Archbold, has been named the Archbold High School varsity baseball coach.

The Archbold Area School Board named him to the post during a special meeting, Friday, Oct. 31.

The board opted not to rehire Kevin “Scoop” Miller, a 10-year veteran coach.

The board’s vote on the issue was unanimous following a one hour, 20 minute executive session for personnel issues.

Selgo retired from teaching after 31 years at the end of the 2006-07 school year. He had spent his last 10 years at Archbold High School teaching health and physical education. Today, he serves as a substitute teacher.

For the past 11 seasons, Selgo has served as an assistant baseball coach to Miller.

He was the head ACME baseball coach from 1997 to 2001.

Prior to that, he was head baseball coach at Eastwood High School in Wood County, and was a graduate assistant baseball coach at Bowling Green State University for one year. He also was a volunteer coach at Defiance College for one year.

Selgo said he played baseball and basketball in high school, and at college.

He graduated from PHS in 1971 and BGSU in 1974. He was a BGSU Most Valuable Player, and was named First Team All-Mid-America Conference in 1975 and Second Team All-MAC in 1974.

Nine of the last 10 years, he’s been the eighth grade boys basketball coach in the Archbold school district. He was the head basketball coach at Montpelier for three years, and basketball coach at Eastwood for one year.

“I’ve been everything at Archbold, from varsity coach, to assistant, to JV (junior varsity), to freshmen, to Acme coach,” he said.

Always Involved

“I’ve always been involved in sports. My father (Dick Sr.) was a baseball and basketball coach. He was the basketball coach at Pettisville from the late 1960s to late 1970s. My brothers (Jim and Tim) and I have been both players and coaches,” he said.

Sports run in the family, he said.

“We’ve been involved as players, coaches- even athletic administration.”

Tim Selgo is the athletic director for Grand Valley State University, Allendale, Mich.

Jim Selgo retired as the Archbold Elementary School principal two years ago; today, he is an elementary principal in Scottsdale, Ariz.

“I am excited to be taking over the leadership of the baseball program.

“Scoop Miller helped build a highly respected program. I look forward to continuing that tradition,” D. Selgo said.

“Having been an assistant coach here for the past 11 years, I think this will be a smooth transition for the players and myself.”

Miller’s supplemental baseball coaching contract was not renewed after 10 years in the position.

While he was head baseball coach, Miller racked up a 190- 64 record. Among his wins was the 2005 Division V state baseball championship.

Other Actions

Miller’s AHS girls basketball head coaching supplemental contract was not renewed by the Archbold Area School Board at the August 18 school board meeting. That decision has caused much controversy in the community.

During the Oct. 31 meeting, board members approved a resolution to hire a certified individual “not currently employed by the district for a coaching position.”

Under Ohio law, the board had to pass that resolution to hire Selgo as the baseball coach.

The board also approved tuition reimbursement for Danielle Vandock and Kelly Kruse, at 59% eligibility.- David Pugh
