Design An Ad Gives Students A Chance For Success

This week’s newspaper includes the annual Design An Ad tabloid section featuring advertisements created by Archbold and Pettisville sixth grade students.

For the past 21 years, students have had their work published in this newspaper because advertisers and teachers support the project.

Area businesses purchase the space in the tab section and choose the winning designers. Art, English, and computer applications teachers work with the students, encouraging them to be creative and do their best work and stressing the importance of correct spelling and proper punctuation and grammar.

Every year, some of the winning designers are students who haven’t had a lot of public successes. During ceremonies to announce the winning ads, it is such a joy to see their faces light up as they realize their ad was chosen for publication.

With the applause of classmates ringing in their ears, they step up to the front of the room with beaming smiles, some quietly saying, “I can’t believe I won! I can’t believe I won!”

That’s when we know the project has touched the students.

Hopefully the small taste of success the students experience through Design An Ad will inspire them to take bigger bites as they discover the endless creative possibilities that lie in front of them.
