Greetings, Carptown!
I’ve arrived just in time for the beginning of the best festival in the world, the Archbold Carp Festival! Three days of food, fun, entertainment, and bargains in the best place on earth!
Boy, I sure am glad I didn’t make a detour to see my friends in the Wauseon Reservoir. Did you see that photo on the front page? That carp could have been me!
My Asian cousins have been trying to get to Archbold for years to check out the Carp Festival, because I’ve told them all about how fun it is. But they’re having a hard time getting through.
Chicago built an electric fence to prevent them from getting into Lake Michigan. Instead, they’re swimming up the Wabash River to get to Fort Wayne, Ind. They’ll hang out there until flooding allows them to cross over into the Maumee River.
Then all they have to do is swim up the Maumee until right before Defiance, then cross into the Tiffin River and swim past Stryker right up to Archbold!
Now, I must warn you about these Asian cousins. They’re ugly. They also love to eat. If they ever make it here, they’ll probably eat all of the food that’s offered without giving anyone else a chance.
Hmmm, maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to invite them to Archbold.
It’s the 31st year for the Carp Festival. Can you believe it?
Think back to 1980, the first year for the fest. Jimmy Carter, US President, signed legislation approving $1.5 billion in loan guarantees to bail out the Chrysler Corporation.
The US men’s ice hockey team became known as the “Miracle on Ice” after defeating the Soviet team 4-3 to win the gold medal. Then Carter announced the US would boycott the Summer Olympics in Moscow.
Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington.
John Lennon was shot and killed.
Star Wars Episode V: The
Empire Strikes Back
was released.
“Who Shot J.R.” became an obsession for television viewers.
But now we’re in 2010, and the Carp Fest promises to be a whopper! Sidewalk sales, volleyball tournaments, Art in the Park, the Run for the Lights, live entertainment in the park, a fishing derby, the big Lions Club fish fry (they’re not serving carp, thank goodness!) and auction on Friday night… plus so much other stuff I just can’t mention it all!
Just check the listing of events inside this issue and have a great time in the big town of Archbold this weekend!
See you there! Cornelius Carp
