Troopers from the Swanton Post of the Ohio State Highway patrol announced in a press release that three people suffered serious or critical injuries as the result of a single-vehicle accident on the Ohio Turnpike, Friday, Aug. 1.
OSHP officials said at about 3:20 pm, a conversion van driven by Rosa Barrios, 49, Waukegan, Ill., was traveling east on the turnpike and went out of control. The van went off the right, or south, side of the roadway, overturned, and came to rest in the ditch near the 31-mile marker.
R. Barrios and one of her passengers, Marbella Barrios, 17, were taken to the Fulton County Health Center by Fulton County Emergency Medical Service ambulances. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Two helicopter ambulances landed near the crash scene and transported three other passengers: Antonio Barrios, 57, Xiomara Lopez, 17, and Irma Rosiles, 54, all of Waukegan, to Toledo Hospital with serious and critical injuries.
Troopers closed the eastbound lanes for about 90 minutes during the rescue efforts.
Assisting at the scene were Archbold Fire and Rescue, Wauseon Fire Department, Fayette, Fire Rescue, Lyons Fire Rescue, and ALS-2, the Delta-based paramedic unit.
There were reports of a second mishap involving a motorcycle about a mile west of the first crash in the eastbound lanes. No information on that incident was immediatley available.-posted 10:25 pm Friday, Aug. 1.
