County Youth Earn Honors At Fulton Co. Fair

County Youth Earn Honors At Fulton Co. Fair

Jordyn Pursel, 11, rural Archbold, showed the grand champion hog during the 2008 Fulton County Junior Fair.

Her hog was also named the champion heavyweight hog, and she was the age 11 showmanship winner.

Her brother, Justin, had the reserve champion middleweight hog and was the hog showmanship winner for the 13-year-old age group.

Jordyn, daughter of Jay and Carla, said she had been showing animals for three years, but didn’t expect to receive the grand champion award.

"I knew he was good enough" to win, she said, but didn’t expect the prize.

She got the hog in May; she didn’t give it a name.

She said she brushed her hog a lot, walked him, and fed him a variety of special feeds.

To walk a hog, one uses a piece of pipe or a whip cane. Jordyn said the grand champion was a little difficult to walk at first, but after switching to a whip cane, he improved. The hog has a good attitude, she said.
