With a senior-laden team, the Continental Pirates (8-0) boys basketball team, under Kevin Homier, head coach, rolled into Archbold, Tuesday, Jan. 5, looking for a little New Year booty to take back.
The Streaks (5-3), hosting their first game of the New Year, were looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Ottawa-Glandorf, but suffered a 47-44 non-league loss.
“This is the first time we have won here at Archbold in, like, 250 years, so this was a great win for our kids,” said Homier.
“Continental is a good ball club,” said Doug Krauss, AHS head coach. “We knew that going in. They are a veteran squad and an experienced squad. They don’t have a lot of depth, but each guy knows his role.”
With a talented senior class and 29 trips to the charity stripe in the contest, the Pirates held off AHS in the fourth quarter.
Archbold led 13-9 after the first eight minutes and 26-25 at the half.
The Streaks scored only four points in the third and Continental ended the stanza on an 8-0 run for a 34-30 lead.
Garrett Morton, one of two Streaks scoring in double digits with 11 points, bucketed the first points of the fourth, closing the gap to 34- 32.
Chase Ordway, who led the Pirates with 13 points, hit a jumper. Micah McQuillin answered for AHS.
Then the foul shooting began. The Pirates, who hit 17 of 29 for the game, gave Archbold opportunities in the closing minutes, but the Streaks could not capitalize.
Pirate Brock Homier, who missed most of the first half due to foul trouble, made good at the foul line, pushing the advantage to 38-34.
Following a deuce by Morton, the Pirates went on a 6- 0 run. Damon Schmidt hit a put-back, Austin Sharp and Ordway both hit from the foul line, and Continental led 44-36 with 3:04 left.
Telly Fricke ended Archbold’s scoring woes, converting a steal into two points. Collin Walker, who also led AHS with 11 points, added a deuce to close the gap to 44- 42 with 54 seconds left.
Shooting the double bonus from the foul line, Schmidt made one and missed one,
Morton answered to close the gap to 45-44.
Schmidt again was sent to the foul line, and made one of two.
Fricke got a shot off on Archbold’s next possession, but it missed the mark. John Spitnale got the rebound for Continental and was immediately fouled.
Spitnale, who finished with 12 points, missed both free throws. Archbold lost the handle on the rebound and Sharp came up with the loose ball.
Sharp was fouled and went to the charity stripe with 2.4 ticks left. He made just one foul shot, but that was all the Pirates needed to seal the win as time ran out on the Streaks.
“We have missed foul shots all year, and it is going to cost us a game,” said Homier. “These kids can shoot; we just have to get better. Austin (Sharp) made big foul shots at the end.”
“It was a knock-down, drag-out affair right from the get-go,” said Krauss. “They gave us opportunities at the end with those missed foul shots.”
