The news is often bad: car crashes, crime, failure. But every so often, there’s a story that comes out of nowhere and puts a smile on your face.
Last week, the story was about the Pettisville High School academic quiz team, known affectionately as “The Nerd Herd.”
The Nerd Herd went to an invitational tournament in Hicksville, Saturday, Nov. 18. The event was a qualifier for the National Academic Quiz Tournaments, which hosts national events for large and small schools.
An NAQT event is not easy. Pettisville quizzers were told to be happy if they won one game during the tournament. Even their coach, Rebecca Dorosz, a PHS teacher, told the team to shoot for a fifth-place finish.
Well, they didn’t finish fifth. Out of 18 teams– all from larger schools– The Nerd Herd finished third, qualifying for not just the small school national competition, but also the large school competition.
It was a surprising finish for everyone, including NAQT officials, who made The Nerd Herd their Team of the Week.
It has long been known that Pettisville Schools is an outstanding institution. In spite of– or maybe because of– its small enrollment, many PHS graduates have gone on to outstanding success. PHS students have excelled in the classroom and in athletics. Support from the Pettisville community is second to none.
Dorosz said she is proud of the team for its success. Everyone in the area is, too.
