Clara Kerk is the February Resident of the Month at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home, Archbold. She will be 81 this month.
The youngest of four children, she was born in Clayton, N. J.
She married Albert Kerk on June 4, 1949. They were married 57 years and raised three daughters and one son: Pauline Lantz, Christine Lightcap, Eileen Cramer, and Mark Kerk.
Clara has 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, with one more on the way.
A nurse by profession and lifelong learner, she studied for a bachelor’s degree when Mark began kindergarten.
She worked as a school nurse and went to college classes in the evening.
She earned a master’s degree in student personnel services in 1977.
As a child, she played the piano by ear and taught herself to read music. In high school she accompanied the school choir and special quartets.
Eventually, Clara became the church pianist and a choir director.
Clara drove the church bus for outings and Vacation Bible School for several years.
Her children and their families took her all over the United States and to Ecuador, South America.
After her husband died in 2006, she lived alone until moving to Fairlawn Haven in April 2008.
