Choose Constitutional Amendments Carefully

Seems like every time Ohio voters go to the polls, they’re asked to make changes, also known as amendments, to the Ohio Constitution.

The constitutional amendment process is attractive to some because it bypasses the state legislature and the Ohio Supreme Court.

Once an amendment passes, it can only be removed or altered by another amendment.

To put an amendment before Ohio voters, all one has to do is circulate a petition, gather enough signatures, and submit it to the Secretary of State. If it meets the requirements, it goes on the ballot. If it passes, the amendment becomes law.

All it takes is money. Professional firms specialize in gathering petition signatures. Lawyers write the ballot language and get the petitions through the Secretary of State. And there are political consultants and advertising agencies to convince voters to vote for the amendment.

In the end, it’s up to Ohio voters, each and every one, to consider the worthiness of each amendment proposal and decide for themselves if it is truly worthy of becoming Ohio law.

A person could spend unlimited amounts of time researching each and every angle, each and every argument for or against a particular amendment. Before casting a ballot, the voter must decide, on his or her own, what’s best for the state.

Choose wisely.
