Change PHS Graduation Date For Class Of 2009?

Pettisville School Board members approved district calendars for the next two school years at the regular board meeting Monday night, March 10.

The calendars were approved with only tentative graduation dates so board members would have a chance to get feedback from district residents on a proposed change in graduation day and time.

In the past, Pettisville has held graduation on the Sunday afternoon of Memorial Day weekend. A proposal before the board calls for graduation to be moved to the Friday evening before Memorial Day.

For the 2008-2009 year, graduation would be moved to May 22, since Memorial Day is May 25, the last Monday in the month.

Board members said they wanted to hear from residents of the district and parents of current students before they decided on the graduation day proposal.

The calendar for 2008-09 calls for school to begin on Wednesday, Aug. 20, with all of the traditional holidays observed as usual. There would be no school on Labor Day, Junior Fair day, Thanksgiving day and the Friday after Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day and Memorial Day.

The calendar also includes a two-week break at Christmas, and Friday and Monday off at Easter.

Steve Switzer, district superintendent, reported that parents and faculty were surveyed to determine if they would like a spring break. The results showed that a large majority preferred the short break at Easter instead of a longer spring break.

Pettisville will continue to close Thursday and Friday in the first week of November for parent teacher conferences, and have no school on the Friday before Martin Luther King Jr. Day to allow a faculty workday. The last day for students would be May 27.

A similar calendar was tentatively approved for the 2009- 10 school year, with classes beginning Aug. 25 and school ending May 27. That calendar will be reviewed and revised if needed next year. – D.J. Neuenschwander
