Central Mennonite Expansion Underway

began construction on a major addition and renovation project in early May that is expected to be completed in May 2008.

The church is located on State Route 2, northeast of Archbold.

The project, which has been in the planning stages since 2004, will add 10,000 square feet to the church facility, said Wayne Short, church congregation member and building committee chairman.

The addition will include a new worship sanctuary, a common gathering area, and a suite of offices for the staff.

After completion of the addition in December, plans call for the renovation of the older portion of the church facility, which was built in 1936, Short said.

That part of the project will the current structure and lowering it to ground level. Lowering the floor will provide easier access to the building and also allow the addition of a second story.

The ground level space will then be converted for use as a fellowship hall and a youth room. The second story will house a primary education area. The kitchen also is scheduled to undergo a major renovation and update.

Short said the total cost for the project is estimated at $3.2 million. Funds will primarily come from donations given by the church membership.

The church hired Midwest Contracting of Holland, Ohio, to oversee the project.- D. J. Neuenschwander
