Census Bureau Gearing Up

The United States government is gearing up for its largest peacetime project.

It’s the 2010 census, said Dennis White, of the Toledo offi ce of the Census Bureau.

In Ohio, Michigan, and West Virginia, the Census Bureau will hire 55,000 workers, including several thousand within the next few months, to perform the once-every-ten-years count of Americans.

The census is one of the requirements written into the United States Constitution.

White told members of the Archbold Area Chamber of Commerce during its Monday, Dec. 8, meeting, that the bureau has had success hiring part-time temporary workers in the cities, but has been having trouble recruiting people from rural areas.

“Who do you know who would like to add $500 to $2,000 a month to their income?” White asked.

He said hours are flexible, and the work could last 18 months.

Tests for census workers are being given in all surrounding counties, he said.

The number for people to call to apply for a job with the Census Bureau is 419-324-7650.

“We need the help of the chamber to fill these jobs with local people,” he said.
