The Archbold boys basketball team made the trek to Bryan, Friday Feb. 19, in hopes of securing an outright Northwest Athletic League title with a win over the Bears.
Looking to play the spoiler, the Bears wanted to pick up one last victory in their current gymnasium.
They are scheduled to move into a new high school building next year.
The Bears came out clicking on all cylinders, jumping out to an 11-0 lead on their way to a 67-54 victory.
Bryan improved to 10-12, 4- 4 NWOAL while the Streaks closed out the regular season at 13-8 and share the league title with Wauseon. Both finished with 7-1 NWOAL records.
Trailing 11-0 just minutes into the game, the Streaks soon quieted the Bryan faithful with a deuce from Kaiden Bedsole and back-to-back three-pointers from Bryce Williams.
After Josh Jones hit a jumper for Bryan, Toby Walker scored the next six points for AHS to take a 14- 13 lead, but Bryan owned the quarter with a deuce from Peyton Lamberson as the quarter expired.
Archbold opened the second with a 5-0 run, but Bryan tallied the next nine.
Archbold answered with four straight, but Bryan closed out the quarter with a jumper from Deylen Miley at the buzzer for a 26-23 advantage at the break.
The two squads played a near-even third quarter, with Archbold edging its host 21-17 for a 44-43 lead, but from there it was all Bryan.
After the Bears scored five straight points to end the third, they picked up where they left off, scoring seven more to start the final eight minutes up 50-44.
Archbold finally broke the ice with a deuce by Austin Welch and a three from Bedsole, but Bryan outscored Archbold 17-5 in the final three minutes to secure the win.
“It was a great atmosphere here tonight,” said Doug Krauss, AHS head coach. “Give credit to Bryan; they had a great start.
“We did get back in it, which isn’t easy to do sometimes. We just couldn’t get any further.
“Bryan made plays, and (Dylan) Lehmann went crazy inside on us.”
“Bryan they came out and did what they had to do. Right now it hurts that we didn’t get the title outright, but we’ve got seven consecutive NWOAL championships, and that speaks well for our program.”
Williams finished with 20 points. Bedsole chipped in 12 and Eli Miller added 10.
Lehmann led Bryan with 20 points. Miley added 10.
Archbold plays Liberty Center (9-13), tonight, Wednesday, 8 p.m., at Wauseon in a Division III sectional semifinal.
