The Archbold Area School Board voted to hire Matthew J. Shields, Archbold, to be the principal of the Archbold Middle School.
The board took the action at a special meeting, late Tuesday afternoon, June 12.
David Deskins, district superintendent, said the board spent about two hours in executive session before returning to regular session to conduct the vote.
Shields has served as the elementary school principal for the Millcreek-West Unity Local School District for the past year.
He joins the staff at Archbold Aug. 1.
Start in Oregon City School District
Shields began his career in education as a special education teacher in the Oregon City School District’s Eisenhower Middle School. He taught there for one year, beginning in 1995.
Shields next went to Swanton High School, where he taught special education classes from 1996 until 2001.
He then spent three years working for the Northwest Ohio Educational Service Center. He was assigned to Stryker Elementary School from 2001 to 2004.
In 2004, he joined the Millcreek-West Unity district as the district athletic director, while teaching special education classes.
Shields was named the elementary school assistant principal at the elementary school in 2010, while maintaining his athletic director duties.
In 2011, he was named the elementary principal.
The elementary school at West Unity includes students from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade.
Shields earned his bachelor’s degree with honors in psychology, with a sociology minor, in 1993 from Ohio Wesleyan University.
He next earned a Master’s of Education degree in educational psychology in 2008 from Miami (Ohio) University in 1998.
He received a degree in educational administration and leadership from Bowling Green State University in 2006.
He obtained his principal’s license that year.
Deskins said Archbold school district officials were attracted to Shields because of his previous experience as both a principal and an athletic director.
"It’s a neat fit with our staff," Deskins said.
"We’re excited to get him in here. He will be a nice addition."
Deskins said both Shields and his wife grew up in the Delta area and moved to Archbold before going to work in the Archbold school district.
The board approved three other personnel items during the Tuesday meeting.
A one-year contract was approved for Jonathan Fether, who will teach science at Archbold High School for the 2012-13 school year.
A two-year contract was approved for Robyn Kuhlman as a school psychologist. The contract is effective Aug. 1.
The board also accepted the resignation of Michael Wilson, a school district custodian, effective June 13.
The Archbold Area School Board will hold its next meeting Monday, June 18, at 5:30 pm in the Archbold High School Media Center.–posted 3.44 pm 6/13/12
