Under Paul Wayne, Holgate head boys basketball coach, the Tigers (1-4) have relied on defensive ball control and team discipline.
For decades, Wayne’s formula has been a proven success.
For three quarters Wayne’s formula almost claimed another victim when the Tigers invaded Archbold, Saturday, Dec. 15.
Archbold trailed through three quarters until taking the lead early in the fourth and picking up a 32-26 win.
Holgate led 9-3 after one and 13-9 at the midway point.
At the end of three Archbold (3-1) still trailed 19-18,but took the lead with 7:01 left in the fourth and held off the pesky Tigers.
Evan Wyse paced Archbold with nine points. Landon Grim led Holgate with 12.
Holgate out-rebounded the bigger Streaks 16-8, but committed more turnovers, 15 to Archbold’s seven.
The Streaks sealed the win at the foul line, scoring 16 points at the charity stripe. Zeb Frank, Wyse, and Tyson Dietrich were all 3-4 at the foul line to help AHS keep the lead.
Holgate was 0-1 in free throws.
“It was a hard-fought game,” said Doug Krauss, AHS head coach.
“Holgate did a great job, and our guys kept battling and found a way to finish.
“We received some nice play off our bench.”
