Evergreen’s Melanie Brock won in 23:41.

Mike Watchmann, AHS coach, was particularly pleased that the freshman girls endured the heat and distance, since it was their first competition at 5000 meters.

“I was pleased with the way the athletes ran their first meet,” he said. “Normally Defi- ance is the first meet they run and they use it to get a feel for their race pace, but because of flooding this was the first race of the season.

“All of the runners showed good endurance. Emphasis on speed work should help them improve dramatically.”
