Boys U-14

The Archbold Blue Streak Soccer Club boys U-14 team defeated Napoleon 2-1, Monday, Oct. 20, under the lights at Spengler Field. After a scoreless first half, David Bontrager teamed up with Andrew Mayer on an indirect free kick to break the deadlock in the 47th minute. Mayer tapped the ball into play while Bontrager knocked in the goal from 20 yards out.

The Streaks built on their lead three minutes later when Jase Grosjean netted a goal with Mayer again providing the assist. Napoleon answered with its lone goal with 11 minutes remaining.

The Streaks traveled to Toledo, Saturday, Oct. 25, for the season finale, handing Glass City its first loss of the season. Archbold got on the board early when Brodie Ranzau sent a cross over to Bontrager, who scored from 12 yards out. Glass City responded with a goal 12 minutes later to tie the halftime score at 1.

Archbold jumped ahead again 13 minutes after halftime as Grosjean scored from 10 yards out on the left side after a Bontrager touch pass assist. With nine minutes remaining, Mayer scored on an Alex Hurst assist. Glass City narrowed the lead to 3-2 with a goal with six minutes left, but the Streak defense held firm to earn the victory.

Archbold’s final record was 6-3-1, good for third place in the nine-team Northwest Ohio Youth Soccer League, Division 2. Other team members are Ben Eggers, Ryan King, Caleb Liechty, Devin Shannon, Bryce Tinsman, Nathan Wachtmann, Seth Yoder, and Zach Zimmerman.

Boys U-18

The Ft. Wayne Fusion traveled to Archbold, Thursday, Oct. 23, falling to the Streaks 5-2. Bobby Rodriguez started the scoring in the 25th minute, heading an Aaron Bontrager corner kick at the goalie who successfully deflected it, only to have Rodriguez knock in the loose carom. Ft. Wayne tied the score five minutes before the half.

After the break, Adrian Ramirez served up a nice pass to Bontrager, who quickly turned and fired from 30 yards out, finding the right corner of the goal. Three minutes later, Bontrager weaved through traffic down the middle until only one defender and the keeper remained, scoring from the 12-yard mark.

Archbold continued the assault in the 67th minute when Rodriguez headed in a Bontrager corner kick to build the lead to 4-1. With 23 minutes remaining, Nate Rodriguez fired in a goal from 20 yards out on the right side, with Jarett Lerma assisting. Ft. Wayne scored a consolation goal with 17 minutes left to produce the 5-2 final.

The victory gave Archbold a final season record of 11-1. Other team members are Josh Smith, Josh Cuellar, Peter Lehman, Garrett Waidelich, and Austin Short, seniors; Chase Gingerich, a junior; Justin Allison, Chandler Stevens, and Lucas Burnett, sophomores; and Bake Drewes, Gabe Peña, Clayton Lehman, David Lauber, Nick Cassidy, Jonny Lantz, and McCaylen Croninger, freshmen.
