Girls U-11

In girls under-11 soccer action, Anthony Wayne traveled to Archbold, Saturday Sept. 27, hoping to avenge a loss earlier in the season. Anthony Wayne found control at the beginning of the game but was unable to find the net as Mim Beck, Sydney Ranzau, Mckenna Lantz and Neila Kinsman kept it just out of shooting range.

Closing in at halftime, Anthony Wayne sent a few hard shots toward the net, but Cassie Wyse stopped everything. Archbold finally found a groove and penetrated Anthony Wayne’s defense. Camryn Hostetler, Madison Kohler, and Brooke Hines spread the AW defense with a nice passing game, and Hines found the net, giving Archbold a 1-0 lead.

Anthony Wayne answered with a shot from the 18-yard line, tying the contest. Subbing in on the Archbold offense were Taylor West and Kinsman. West was given the task to shadow a very aggressive AW player and kept her from her “A” game, allowing Kinsman to stay wide and make two huge shots from outside the 18. The half ended with Archbold leading 3-1.

The start of the second half showed a very aggressive Anthony Wayne; scoring quickly, the Generals tied the game at 3. Lantz stepped in as goalie and didn’t allow another ball to find the net. Wyse put together two solo drives, giving Archbold a 5-3 lead. Physical defense by Beck and M. Kohler put an end to Anthony Wayne.

First year player Brooke Kohler had a tremendous effect in the second half. Offensively, she kept the ball on Anthony Wayne’s end of the field. Archbold ended on top 5-3, sweeping AW.

The Streaks travel to Bedford, Mich., Sunday, Oct. 5 for an afternoon contest.

Girls U-12

The girls 12 and under soccer team traveled to Toledo to play Maumee Express, Tuesday, Sept. 23. Play started early due to the setting sun, and the girls dominated from the beginning. Hannah Yoder, Jensyn Garrow, and Korey Arend started on offense. Arend was the first to score, and Garrow scored 14 minutes into the game.

Mara Beck substituted in for Garrow; Beck scored at 15:22. Ashley Short, in goal, had little to do, as the midfield and defense kept the ball out of the penalty area. In the second half, Demetria Martinez started as left wing. She scored her first goal of the season and her first travel soccer league goal.

Garrow scored Archbold’s fifth goal. Finally, A. Short moved up to right wing and scored her first goal of the season. Meridith Short took control of the goalie position, but again Archbold dominated the ball. The center referee called the game 20 minutes into the second half due to darkness, and Archbold won 6-0.

The girls traveled to Clay Center to play the AAFC Patriots, Sunday, Sept. 28. AAFC came out fighting and scored six minutes in the game. The defense of M. Short, Lauren Stuckey, and Alexa Coressel helped goalie A. Short save the ball from several shots as Archbold’s offense struggled.

AAFC made a breakaway 25 minutes in the first half to score its second goal. In the second half, Archbold toughened up to make a few of its own breakaways, but AAFC hustled to shut it out. M. Short made many saves as goalie in the second half. Yoder and A. Short protected M. Short from the aggressive AAFC offense as AAFC won 2-0.
