Having to push the season opener back a couple of weeks due to Coronavirus issues, the Archbold boys basketball team returned to the hardwood last weekend.

The Streaks squared off against a pair of Green Meadows Conference opponents and was victorious in both contests.

The Blue Streaks defeated Ayersville 47-39, Friday, Dec. 11 and then handled Holgate 51-28, Saturday, Dec. 12, to start the season 2-0.

“It was a good first weekend,” said Joe Frank, AHS head coach. “It would be about how I expected.

“We can be happy with this weekend in terms of results, but we also have a lot of work to do.”

The Streaks came out on fire against Holgate for an early 13-0 lead.

The Tigers then outscored Archbold 11-2 over the final 3:18 of the first period to cut the difference to four, 15-11.

The Holgate comeback was short-lived. Archbold held a 13-2 advantage in the second quarter to lead 28-13 at the half.

Archbold added to its lead with an 11-9 advantage in the third, and went into the final quarter up 39-22.

The reserves then got some much-needed playing time to preserve the win.

“We lost our focus,” said Frank. “We lost track of a couple shooters, and we talked about not doing that.

“We regained our composure, started guarding like we were capable of, and then we kind of pulled away.

“I thought our kids did some good things, but we’ve got plenty to work on.”

Alex Roth led all scorers with 14 points. Ashton Kammeyer contributed 11.

Robbie Thacker led Holgate (1-4) with 11 points.

AHS 47, Ayersville 39

Archbold battled back from an early deficit to hand the Pilots their first loss of the season (2-1) at Ayersville.

The Streaks trailed 21-19 at the half but outscored Ayersville 28-18 in the second half to earn the win.

Archbold nailed six threepointers and was 7-8 at the free-throw line.

Roth and DJ Newman led the scoring charge with 16 and 14 points, respectfully.

Ayersville’s Kallen Brown led all scorers, with 20 points.

“You’re not going to take two weeks off, come back and practice five days and look like you’re in mid-season form,” said Frank.

“I was pleased with our effort all weekend. Our execution was spotty, and our shooting was obviously spotty, but those are all things that are going to get better as we’re in the gym more.”
