Blackbirds Open Season With Win

The Pettisville boys basketball team started its defense of its 2018 Buckeye Border Conference title when the Birds hosted Montpelier, Friday, Nov. 29, in the season opener for both.

The Birds shot 46% from the field and 100% from the foul line on their way to a 57- 31 win.

“We talked about having to play with effort and energy, and our kids really did that,” said Brian Leppelmeier, PHS head coach.

“Even when we made mistakes, we still had that effort and energy throughout the game. I really thought all of our guys set the tone.”

After Montpelier hit a basket for a 2-0 lead, the Birds went on a 12-0 run over the next 4:30 and led 18-3 after one.

Pettisville outscored the Locos 7-2 early in the second to lead 25-5, but Montpelier answered with an 8-0 run.

Josh Horning nailed a three-pointer as time expired for a 28-13 PHS lead at halftime.

Pettisville outscored the Locos 19-9 in the third quarter, led by Graeme Jacoby’s eight points, to extend the difference to 47-22.

The Birds opened the fourth with a 10-2 run to open their biggest lead of the night at 57-24, and the bench players were inserted for the final minutes.

Montpelier finished the game with a 7-0 run for the 57-31 final.

Jacoby led all scorers with 22 points and collected six rebounds.

Max Leppelmeier scored 14 points, was 4-7 from three-point land, and had four assists to help lead PHS.

Austin Peffley led the Locos, with eight points.

The Birds were 22-48 from the field for 46% and were 6- 6 at the charity stripe.

Montpelier was 10-44 from the field for 23% and 10-15 at the foul line for 67%.

Pettisville won the rebounding battle, 32-26.
