Blackbirds Improve To 9-1 With Pair Of Wins



The Pettisville boys basketball team took to the road to earn a pair of wins to run its record to 9-1, 6-0 in the Buckeye Border Conference– one game ahead of second-place Stryker (5-1 BBC).

The Birds defeated Delta in a rescheduled contest 50- 42, and dropped BBC rival North Central 62-37.

Bad weather suspended the contest with Delta from Dec. 30 to Thursday, Jan. 4, at Delta.

It was a close contest from the start with Pettisville leading 10-9 after the first quarter.

The Panthers (2-6) outscored the Birds 10-9 in the second to tie the game at 19 at the break.

Pettisville pulled ahead by one, 32-31, after three.

PHS outscored the Panthers 18-11 in the final eight minutes to earn the hardfought 50-42 win.

The Birds shot 17-49 from the field for 35%, but were red-hot at the charity stripe, going 14-16 for 88%.

Delta was 17-44 from the field for 39% but struggled at the free-throw line, going just 7-17 for 41%.

Pettisville won the rebounding battle by one, 29- 28.

Graeme Jacoby led PHS with 14 points. Canidate Vickery added 11.

Delta’s Bowen Green led all scorers, with 20.

Pioneer was the site for a BBC contest between the Birds and the Eagles, Saturday, Jan. 6.

Pettisville was looking to end the first half of the conference schedule undefeated.

The Birds led 14-12 after one and expanded the difference with a 17-8 scoring advantage in the second for a 31-20 advantage at the half.

Pettisville kept its foot on the pedal and raced out to a 51-30 lead after three.

An 11-7 scoring advantage in the fourth helped the Birds take the 62-37 victory.

Pettisville shot 22-51 from the field for 43% with five three-pointers.

North Central (5-7, 2-4 BBC) was 16-39 for 41%.

The Birds hit 13-17 free throws for 76% while NC went to the line only three times and made two for 67%.

Pettisville had a huge rebounding advantage, 27-16, and had only nine turnovers compared to 18 for the Eagles.

Jacoby and Landon Roth scored 11 points each to lead PHS. Detric Yoder and Justin Rupp added 10 each.

NC’s Jack Bailey led all scorers, with 18.
