Blackbirds Beat North Central, Liberty Center

The Pettisville boys basketball team raised its record to 6-7, 3-3 in the Buckeye Border Conference with two victories last week.

The Birds hosted North Central, Friday, Jan. 28. PHS took a 33-20 lead into the locker room and never relinquished it, beating the Eagles 56-52 in a Buckeye Border Conference matchup.

The Blackbirds traveled to Liberty Center, Saturday, Jan. 29. PHS came back from a 27-13 halftime deficit to outscore the Tigers 37-19 in the second half for a 50-46 non-league victory. PHS 56, NC 52

Taylor Short led Pettisville with 21 points, including four three-pointers. Also in double figures were Aaron King, 13, and Jacob Rupp, 12.

Bryce Ely led the Eagles (5-6, 3-3 BBC) with 15 points, including three treys.

The Birds were 16-39 from the field for 41% and 20-27 from the foul line for 74%. North Central was 20-53 from the field for 38% and 8-17 from the foul line for 47%.

Each team grabbed 30 rebounds, and Pettisville committed 10 turnovers to NC’s eight. PHS 50, LC 46

The Tigers led 13-9 after one. A 14-4 second quarter put LC in front 27-13 at the half.

Pettisville outscored the Tigers 15-12 in the third to close the gap to 39-28, then exploded in the fourth quarter for 22 points, including 8-10 at the foul line. Liberty Center managed only two field goals and three free throws in the fourth quarter for seven points.

PHS committed seven turnovers in the game, only one of which was in the second half. LC committed 14.

The Birds grabbed one more rebound, 26-25.

Short led PHS with 12 points, including two treys.

LC’s Phil Snow led all scorers with 23 points. The Tigers dropped to 5-8 on the season.

Pettisville was 16-42 from the field for 38% and 15-19 at the foul line for 79%. Liberty Center was 16-40 from the field for 40% and 7-13 from the foul line for 54%.
