Blackbird Girls Fall To PH, Beat Hilltop

The Pettisville girls basketball team split a pair of contests last week, falling to Patrick Henry but defeating Hilltop.

The Birds traveled to PH, Tuesday, Feb. 5. The Patriots, ranked fifth in Division IV by the Associated Press, improved to 18-1 with a 54- 35 defeat of the visitors.

Pettisville hosted the Cadets, Thursday, Feb. 7. The Birds improved to 12-8, 7-2 in the Buckeye Border Conference with a 42-29 victory.

The Birds led 9-7 after one period, but an 11-5 second period gave the Patriots an 18-14 halftime advantage.

PH took control in the third, outscoring Pettisville 19-6 for a 37-20 lead going into the final eight minutes.

Lauren Hostetler led PHS with nine points.

PH’s Mallory Michaelis led all scorers with 12. Katy Hammer was also in double figures, with 11.

The Birds were an ice-cold 12-48 from the field for 25% and 5-7 at the foul line for 71%. The Patriots were 20-46 from the field for 43% and 10- 20 at the foul line for 50%.

PH won the rebounding battle 40-20 and committed eight turnovers to the Blackbirds’ 12.

PHS 42, Hilltop 29

The Birds led 11-5 after one, 15-9 at the half, and 29- 13 after three.

“It was a nice win for us,” said Jason Waldvogel, PHS head coach. “Our defense carried us for the first three quarters.”

Dana Fricke led all scorers with 15 points. Hostetler scored 14.

Hannah Bleikamp led the Cadets (11-8, 4-5 BBC) with 12.

Pettisville was 15-37 from the field for 41% and 9-15 from the foul line for 60%. Hilltop was 7-43 from the field for a frigid 16% and 14- 16 at the foul line for 88%.

The Birds grabbed 30 rebounds to Hilltop’s 21, but committed 13 turnovers to the Cadets’ 10.
