Blackbird Boys Fall To Stryker, Edgerton



The Pettisville boys basketball team dropped to 5-6, 3-1 in the Buckeye Border Conference with a pair of losses last week.

The Birds traveled to Stryker, Thursday, Jan. 10, for a BBC battle. The Panthers (4-7, 3-1 BBC) used a 13-6 first quarter and a 15-5 third to defeat PHS 47-34.

Pettisville hosted Edgerton, Saturday, Jan. 12. The Bulldogs (10-1), ranked 15th in Division IV by the Associated Press, outscored the Birds 25-19 on their way to a 65-58 non-league victory.

Stryker hit two of its five three-pointers for the game in the first period. Alic Martinez and Austin Robison each hit treys while Hunter Clingaman scored on two baskets and Parker Ruffer scored on a conventional three to give SHS 13 points.

Pettisville had only six points on deuces by Korben Rychener, Kurt Siegel, and Austin Dykstra.

The Birds turned things around in the second as the outscored Stryker 11-9, but went into the locker room down 22-17.

Stryker pulled away in the third, outscoring Pettisville 15-5 for a 37-22 lead going into the final eight minutes.

The Birds hit three treys in the final period, but went down to defeat 47-34.

Tanner Rufenacht and Siegel each scored eight points to lead PHS.

Robison led all scorers with 12 points. Dean Beamont was also in double figures, with 11. Edgerton 65, PHS 58

The Bulldogs led 17-15 after one, 26-24 at the half, and 40-37 after three.

They took control in the fourth, outscoring the Birds 25-19 for the seven-point victory.

Edgerton’s Ben Riehle led all scorers with 25 points. Jacob Adams scored 19 and Duane Miller finished with 12.

David Reyes led Pettisville with 17.

Pettisville made six treys, including three by Rufenacht, two by Jeremy Mann, and one by Jacob Valdez. The Birds were 22-49 from the field and 8-13 at the foul line.

The Bulldogs were 24-43 from the field and 15-27 at the foul line, including 10-19 in the fourth quarter.

Edgerton won the rebounding battle 29-26, but committed 13 turnovers to Pettisville’s 10.
