Blackbird Boys Beat Antwerp, Fall To Delta

The Pettisville boys basketball team won their nonleague season opener on the road at Antwerp, 54-49, Thursday, Nov. 29.

The Birds hosted Delta for another non-league contest, Saturday, Dec. 1. Scott Garlinger scored 19 points to lead the Panthers to a 51-43 victory.

PHS 54, Antwerp 49

The Archers led 9-4 after one period and 20-17 going into the locker room. The Birds scored 17 points to Antwerp’s 13 in the third period to take a 34-33 lead going into the final eight minutes.

Pettisville won the fourth period 20-16 for a five-point victory.

David Reyes led PHS with 16 points. Forest Stuckey scored 12 and Kurt Siegel finished with 10.

Antwerp’s Derek Smalley led all scorers with 21 points, including six three-pointers.

Pettisville was 13-15 from the foul line and 19-38 from the field. Antwerp was 9-17 from the foul line and 17-30 from the field.

The Birds won the rebounding battle 25-21. Both teams committed 13 turnovers.

Delta 51, PHS 43

The score was tied at 7 in the first period when Garlinger hit the final bucket of the period off an alley-oop with 32 seconds left.

The basket gave the Panthers a lead they would never relinquish.

Delta built the lead to 20-11 in the second period before the Birds came back to within three, 20-17, on a bucket by Jeremy Mann and two foul shots and a bucket by Valdez.

Garlinger scored the final four points of the first half, giving Delta a 24-17 advantage.

The two teams traded baskets in the third, with Pettisville coming within six, 34- 28, before Delta again scored twice for a 38-28 lead going into the final eight minutes.

Mann threw up a desperation shot at the buzzer from beyond half-court, but the shot rimmed out.

Pettisville went on a 7- 2 run to open the fourth to close the gap to 40-35. Delta then went on a 5-0 run of its own to extend the lead back to 10, 45-35, and went on to a 51-43 victory.

Reyes was the only Blackbird in double figures, with 13.
