Birds Soar Over Delta 75-51 In Season Opener

The Pettisville boys basketball team raced to a 16-2 lead over Delta on its way to a 75- 51 victory in its season opener, Saturday, Dec. 6.

The Birds outscored the Panthers in every quarter. Pettisville had a 24-13 lead after the first, and continued its strong defense in the second, holding Delta to eight points while scoring 15 for a 39-21 halftime lead.

Quinn Nofziger had 14 points and Michael Deffely had 13, accounting for 27 of the Birds’ 39 first-half points.

Pettisville outscored Delta 16- 12 in the third period and held a 55-33 lead going into the final quarter. The Blackbirds led 64- 33 with six minutes left, scoring 20 points to the Panthers’ 18 in the final period for the 75-51 total.

Ten of 11 Blackbirds scored. Deffely led all scorers with 20 points; Q. Nofziger and Michael Haase scored 14 and 13, respectively.

Josh Beverly led Delta with 16.

Pettisville shot 27/51 from the field for 53%, including 4/10 from three-point range. The Birds were 17/24 from the foul line for 71%; Jared Avina sank seven free throws.

The Panthers were 16/36 from the field for 44%; they were 1/12 from three-point range for 8%. Delta was 16/24 from the charity stripe for 67%.

Pettisville out-rebounded Delta 33-25, but had 20 turnovers compared to the Panthers’ 17.

It was a “good team effort” on the night, said Greg Nofziger, PHS coach.
