Birds Raise BBC Record To 8-0

The Pettisville boys basketball team stayed perfect in the Buckeye Border Conference with a 46-39 win over Hilltop, Friday, Feb. 10.

The Birds’ Homecoming was spoiled by Hicksville, Saturday, Feb. 11. The Aces held all the cards in a 43-39 non-league victory.

Pettisville is 12-5, 8-0 BBC.

PHS 46, Hilltop 39

Pettisville led 17-8 after one and 28-19 at the half. The Cadets (4-13, 1-7 BBC) outscored the Birds 12-7 in the third to close the gap to four, 35-31.

PHS scored 11 points in the fourth to Hilltop’s eight for the seven-point margin of victory.

Aaron Bruner led all scorers with 14 points. Also in double figures for the Birds were Aaron King, with 11, and David Reyes, with 10.

Payne Sentile led Hilltop with 10.

Pettisville was 16-42 from the field for 38% and 13-24 from the foul line for 54%. Hilltop was 11-35 from the field for 31% and 15-24 at the foul line for 63%.

The Birds won the rebounding battle 31-27.

Hicksville 43, PHS 39

The Aces (5-11) led 8-4 after one period on a pair of three-pointers and two foul shots.

The Birds came back to tie the score at 15 heading into the locker room. Down 15-10 with 1:19 left, PHS scored the period’s final five points on a pair of foul shots by King, an Arrin Short layup after a Pettisville steal, and a foul shot by Reyes after a Blackbird steal.

With Pettisville down 22- 17 in the third and 4:25 left, Jacob Valdez hit a threepointer to close the gap to 22-20. A technical was called on Hicksville’s Jonny Giesige for throwing an elbow, and Tanner Rufenacht hit both foul shots to tie the score.

Hicksville ended the thirdquarter scoring on a pair of foul shots for a 24-22 lead.

The Aces went on a 6-0 run before Reyes scored a conventional three with 4:12 left.

Hicksville led by nine, 37- 28, with 2:41 left when Pettisville started its comeback. Reyes hit a three-pointer, followed by one of two at the foul line from Travis Beck.

Seth Klepper took Hicksville’s lead back to seven, 39- 32, with 1:49 left.

Bruner hit a basket, followed by Reyes hitting two free throws. All of a sudden, the Birds were down by only three, 39-36, with 1:06 left.

The Aces were sent to the foul line six times in 24 seconds, making four.

King hit a final threepointer with 12.1 seconds left.

Hicksville missed six foul shots in the final 12.1 seconds, but took home a 43-39 victory.

Reyes led PHS with 12 points. Pursel added 10.

Hicksville’s Logan Husted led all scorers with 17. Klepper had 15.

Pettisville was 12-43 from the field for an ice-cold 28% and 12-21 from the foul line for 57%. Hicksville was 14- 33 from the field for 42% and 11-22 at the foul line for 50%.
