Birds Move Closer to BBC Crown

Pettisville took down another Buckeye Border Conference opponent and moved closer to its first BBC boys basketball title since 2015 when the Birds defeated Montpelier in a close contest 52-49.

The Birds also dispatched of Liberty Center in a nonconference contest 52-22 to run their record to 15-1, 9-0 BBC.

Pettisville can clinch at least a share of the BBC with a win over Stryker (10-4, 7-1 BBC), Friday, Feb. 2, in the Bird Cage.

In their first battle this season, PHS came out on top 53-51, Thursday, Dec. 14.

The last time Pettisville won the BBC was in 2015, when the Birds shared the title with Stryker.

Pettisville’s last outright title was in 2012.

PHS 52, Montpelier 49

The Birds traveled to Montpelier, Friday, Jan. 26, for a BBC contest.

The Birds led 15-7 after the first quarter.

Montpelier chipped away in the second quarter, outscoring the Birds 12-9 and going into the locker room trailing 24-19.

Pettisville was up 40-32 going into the final stanza.

The Locos held a 17-12 scoring advantage in the fourth, but the Blackbirds held on for their ninth BBC win of the season.

Graeme Jacoby led PHS with 14 points. Detric Yoder scored 13 and Dillon King added 10.

Montpelier’s Kolden Uribes led all scorers with 28 points.

Pettisville shot 19-41 from the floor for 46% and was 8- 16 at the free-throw line for 50%.

Montpelier was 19-47 from the field for 40% and 6-9 from the charity stripe for 67%.

The Birds won the rebounding battle 27-18, but had 16 turnovers to the Locos’ nine.

PHS 52, LC 22

Pettisville welcomed the Tigers to the Bird Cage, Saturday, Jan. 27, for a nonconference matchup.

The Birds scored in double figures in every quarter and never allowed the Tigers to get into a rhythm en route to the 30-point blowout.

The Birds led 17-5 after one and increased the difference to 18 points, 28-10, at the break.

Pettisville continued to pad its lead in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 24-12 for the 52-22 victory.

Yoder led all scorers with 15 points. Justin Rupp added 11 and Jacoby chipped in 10.

Austin Like and CJ Spradlin led LC with five points each.

Pettisville shot 20-44 from the field for 45% and 8-11 at the foul line for 73%.

LC was an ice-cold 7-45 from the field for 16% and 7- 16 at the foul line for 44%.

The Birds pulled down 39 rebounds to LC’s 23.
