The Pettisville boys basketball team continued its run through the Buckeye Border Conference with a 49-23 victory over Edon, and then held off an upstart Evergreen squad 45-42 in nonleague action to run its record to 13-1, 8-0 BBC.

“It’s kind of a tough time right now,” said Brian Leppelmeier, PHS head coach. “A lot of games, and you’ve got to stay focused, but I think that kind of takes care of itself.

“Our guys know that come each game night, we’re gonna get each team’s best shot, so we’ve got to play our best.”

The Bombers (0-13, 0-8 BBC) invaded the Bird Cage, Thursday, Jan. 18, looking to serve Pettisville its first BBC loss and get their first BBC victory of the season.

The Blackbirds got off to a fast start. Canidate Vickery’s five points in the first 1:30 propelled Pettisville to a 7-0 lead before Edon broke into the scoring column.

A Justin Rupp three-pointer at the buzzer gave PHS a 16-4 lead after one.

Pettisville opened the second with an 8-0 run. Sam Rychener led the charge with five points for a 24-4 advantage.

A Rupp three-point bomb at the end of the second give Pettisville a commanding 29- 8 lead.

The Bombers trimmed the difference to 35-18 after three.

Pettisville led by 22, 44-22, with five minutes left, on its way to the 49-23 final.

“Edon was mixing up their defense a little bit,” said Leppelmeier. “Some man-to-man to start with, then they went zone, but I thought our guys really shared the basketball and really executed.

“Our identity is to play good solid man-to-man defense, and on the offensive end, pass and share the ball. We’ve been very balanced not relying on one person.”

Rupp led all scorers with 14 points. Rychener and Dillon King each added 10.

Cameron Reed and Logan Bloir each scored six to lead Edon.

Pettisville shot 19-43 from the field for 44% and pulled down 32 rebounds.
