Bird Soccer Season Ends

The Pettisville soccer team ended its season, Saturday, Oct. 20, falling to Ottawa Hills 4-0 in the Division III boys sectional final at St. John’s High School, Toledo.

The Blackbirds advanced to the championship match after defeating Cardinal Stritch 5-3, Thursday, Oct. 18, in the sectional semifinal.

Pettisville ends with a 9-8-1 record.

PHS 5, Cardinal Stritch 3

The Birds came out strong, as Quinn Nofziger scored the first goal 42 seconds into the match. He received a pass from Justin Roth and blasted the ball past the Stritch netminder.

Aaron Rupp scored next after receiving a through ball from Nofziger and blasted a shot between the goalie’s legs.

Nofziger scored again as he took a corner kick, which deflected off the goalie into the goal.

Phillip Roth added to the lead off a breakaway, which he put into the left side of the goal.

Nofziger and PHS goalie Andy Switzer hooked up for the fourth time this year as a long punt from Switzer was put away by Nofziger.

The Stritch goalie later received a red card for using bad language at the referee, so the Cardinals had only 10 players for the remainder of the match.

After the Pettisville starters were substituted out, Stritch scored three goals for the 5-3 final.

Ottawa Hills 4, PHS 0

Ottawa Hills scored the lone goal of the first half off a shot into the right of the goal.

In the second half the Green Bears were awarded a penalty kick as a player was fouled inside the 18-yard line. The shot was put into the left side of the goal.

The last two goals were scored off hard shots from outside the 18; both were just out of the reach of a diving Switzer.
