Bird Girls Beat Fayette, Ayersville

The Pettisville girls basketball team brought home a 54- 33 road victory at Ayersville, Tuesday, Jan. 13, then sent Fayette home with a 43-21 loss in a Buckeye Border Conference contest, Friday, Jan. 16.

Against the Pilots, Ayersville (4-4) led 8-7 after one period. Pettisville exploded for 15 second quarter points on the way to a 22-16 halftime lead.

The Birds outscored Ayersville 32-17 in the second half for the 54-33 win.

“We struggled in the first half, especially on the boards,” said Jason Waldvogel, PHS coach. “We didn’t convert on turnovers early, but changed that in the second half.”

Ayersville won the rebounding battle, 29-19, but had 10 more turnovers, 21-11.

Erica King led PHS with 15 points. Also scoring in double figures were Haley Nofziger, 14, and Alexa Short, 11.

Ayersville’s Kim Comden led all scorers with 17 points.

The PHS junior varsity also won, 37-11.

PHS 43, Fayette 21

Pettisville (8-0, 3-0 BBC) jumped out to a 10-5 first-quarter lead and extended it to 22-9 at the half.

The Birds scored 21 secondhalf points to Fayette’s 12 for the 22-point margin of victory.

“We played well defensively tonight, but didn’t convert turnovers into points,” said Waldvogel. “Give coach Oyer and her ladies credit for their intensity tonight.

“We got to the free-throw line tonight, but didn’t convert there, either.”

Pettisville was 10/23 from the foul line for 43% and 16/44 from the field for 36%. Fayette was 5/11 from the line for 45% and 8/31 from the field for 26%.

No player on either side scored in double figures. Stephanie Yoder and E. King each scored eight points to lead PHS.

The Pettisville JV raised its record to 8-0, 3-0 BBC with a 46-33 victory.
