Bernice Ruffer Is October Resident Of The Month

Bernice Ruffer is the October Resident of the Month at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home.

She was born near Napoleon, on Feb. 16, 1920, to Leah (Bickford) & Julius Rohrbaugh, the ninth of 14 children.

Her family moved to a farm southeast of Ridgeville Corners in 1924, where Bernice attended a one-room school until she was in the sixth grade. Her family then moved to a farm east of Napoleon, and she graduated from Napoleon High School in 1938.

Bernice married Robert (Bob) Ruffer, who lived southwest of Archbold, on June 24, 1944. They lived their married life in the Stryker/Archbold area.

Bernice was a homemaker, helped on the farm and raised five children: Roger (Connie), Ralph (Cathy), Rickie (Cindy), Colleen Henry (Carl), and Cindy. She has nine grandchildren (two are deceased) and three greatgrandchildren.

She had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening. She was a great cook; her children and grandchildren are especially fond of her homemade noodles.

Bernice is a member of the Evansport United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher several years. Her husband died October 2003.

Bernice moved to Fairlawn in September 2008.
