ARCHBOLD WEATHER

Bad Things Happen In A Good Town, But It Remains A Good Town

The events of Friday, April 17, were a shock to Archbold.

A young man with a gun chose to harm himself, rather than accept the help that was offered him.

The sight of police officers in tactical entry gear crowded around his home, word of neighboring homes evacuated and streets blocked off, of tear gas being used in Archbold, certainly was a disconcerting surprise.

In the midst of better economic times, this has been a tough year in the news. Another bitterly cold winter. A sexting scandal in our schools. A shooting in the village that wounded a man. The closing of a major retailer and a landmark downtown drug store. A barn fire that seriously injured a man in neighboring Pettisville. The day before the Friday incident, a woman killed in an auto accident near our village.

Just as bad things happen to good people, bad things can happen in a good town. We can be sad about them, we can mourn those lost, but wallowing in despair is not necessary.

This newspaper has said before: Archbold has endured worse, and come through. Times of economic hardship, of disasters– natural and manmade, of tragedy and loss, all have come and gone.

Our town remains a good town. Our schools offer our children outstanding educations. Our houses of worship remain open, and are functioning and flourishing. Our parks are putting on coats of spring green after a long severe winter.

There is a time to be sad; but tomorrow, the sun will shine again, and so will Archbold.
