August 2010 Was Another Hot Month

After a scorching hot July, August was better, but not much.

August 2010 was the hottest of any August since 2005.

The average high temperature in August 2010, as recorded by the Archbold Wastewater Treatment Plant, was 90.4 degrees. Between 2005 and 2009, the highest August average was 87.2 degrees, recorded in 2005. In 2009, the average was 83.1 degrees.

Between 2005 and 2009, the temperature was in triple digits once, 101 degrees in 2007. In 2010 the temperature was 102 on Aug. 29, and 101 the following day.

In 2007, seven days had highs above 96. There were only five days of 96 or higher in 2010.

But 2010 had more days of 91 degrees or higher than any other August between 2005 and 2009. In total, there were 15 days when the recorded high temperature was 91 or hotter.

During August 2010, there was only one day the high was under 80: on Aug. 21, when the high was 74.

Between 2005 and 2009, no August on record had less than four days of high temperatures less than 80 degrees. In 2009, the temperature was less than 80 degrees eight days.

The amount of rainfall recorded by the wastewater treatment plant during August 2010 was a scant, 1.5 inches, but nothing like 2008, when only four-tenths of an inch was recorded.

Neither was it like 2007, when 18.3 inches of rain fell in August. There was a three-inch rain on Aug. 21, 2007, followed by six inches on Aug. 22, 2007.
