Attendance Down At State Tournaments

Attendance at the 2010 Ohio boys basketball state tournament was 130,820, down from 175,399 in 2005- 06, according to a financial report presented to the Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors, Thursday, Aug. 5.

Girls basketball state tournament total attendance was 35,185, down from 45,921 in 2005-06.

The wrestling state tournament total attendance was 55,960, down from 63,680 in 2005-06.

Attendance at the swimming, bowling, gymnastics and ice hockey state tournaments remained consistent with recent years.

The 2010 spring sports reports will be presented to the OHSAA Board of Directors in October.

In other reports, the total number of OHSAA member high schools for the 2010-11 school year is 828. Four new schools were admitted in the spring: St. Clairsville East Richland Christian, Granville Christian, Cincinnati Oyler and Cincinnati Riverview East Academy.

Two schools consolidated into one. Lorain Admiral King and Lorain Southview consolidated into Lorain.

Seven schools closed: Cleveland East, Toledo Libbey, Perrysville Louis Bromfi eld, South Euclid Regina, Cleveland South and the two previously mentioned Lorain schools that consolidated.

The OHSAA Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Committee reported that it is in favor of posting information regarding coaches and student-athlete ejections on the OHSAA website.

Currently, when a coach is ejected, they are required to pay a $100 fine and take the online course, Teaching and Modeling Behavior. Last year, $11,200 was collected in ejection fines, which was dedicated to the OHSAA “Respect the Game” program.
