Armstrong Named Fairlawn Resident Of The Month

Thelma Armstrong is the August Resident of the Month at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home.

The oldest of 11 children, she was born July 14, 1924, to Glen and Laura (Grieser) Rufenacht. Thelma attended the Pettisville Schools and was the valedictorian of her graduating class.

As a young woman, she met Lloyd Armstrong. The couple was married on March 18, 1945. They lived their entire married lives near or in Archbold.

Thelma and Lloyd had four children, daughters Nancy Emens and Joan Greene, and sons Larry Armstrong and Keith, who died at 9.

Thelma was a devoted mother and wife. After the children were in school, she began working at Gendron Wheel. Later, she worked at Sauder Woodworking until retirement.

Thelma had many interests. She sang in several quartets, taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and was involved in the Women’s’ Sewing Club. She played the piano and accordion.

Over the years Thelma did sewing, reading, needlework, liquid embroidery, glass blowing, crafts, and reading. She also kept a diary. She and her husband raised several kinds of dogs; her favorites were the Chihuahuas.

Thelma and Lloyd were members of a camping club; they took boating trips and fished. They traveled in their camper and took bus tours, visiting most of the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The couple toured Europe and the Holy Land.

Thelma still is an avid reader. She enjoys attending music and religious programs. Thelma has a very supportive family who visits her all the time and includes her in family events.
