Archbold Youth Soccer Club

The Archbold Blue Streaks youth soccer club, formerly Black Swamp, kicked off its fourth year with three girls teams and seven boys teams ranging in age from 9-and-under to 18-and-under.

The 10 teams feature 119 players, with most seasonopening matches occurring after Labor Day.

Boys U-18

The boys U-18 team opened its season, Monday, Aug. 13 with a 3-1 loss to the visiting Lake Flyers.

The Streaks got on the winning track, Tuesday, Aug. 28, hosting Napoleon’s junior varsity under the lights at newly refurbished Spengler Field.

The Wildcats struck first with a 16th-minute goal. Archbold responded with five minutes remaining in the first half, when Blake Drewes headed in a cross from midfielder Aaron Bontrager for the score.

Six minutes after halftime, Napoleon was called for handling the ball in the penalty area. Bontrager knocked the ensuing penalty kick into the right corner of the goal to break the 1-1 tie.

Archbold added to its lead with 17 minutes remaining, as winger Lucas Burnett scored an unassisted goal to put the Streaks ahead 3-1. Napoleon scored again with five minutes left, but the Archbold defense held on for the 3-2 victory.

The Blue Streaks traveled to Pettisville, Thursday, Aug. 30 to take on the Blackbird junior varsity. Despite numerous shots on goal, the teams battled to a scoreless halftime tie.

In the opening minute of the second half, Bontrager took a shot from the left side. The Pettisville goalie successfully deflected it, only to have Burnett boot the carom into the net.

The Archbold defense, anchored by goalie Marc Miller and defenders Josh Cuellar and Garrett Waidelich, delivered the 1-0 shutout victory to move the Streaks season record to 2-1.

Justin Allison, Klein Gnagey, and Austin Short also turned in strong performances at the midfield and stopper positions.

The boys U-18 returns to the field Thursday, Sept. 6 with a 5 pm match against Start JV at DeVilbiss Stadium in Toledo.
