Boys U-18

The Archbold boys U-18 soccer team notched three victories the week of Sept. 17 to improve its record to 7-1-1.

The Streaks defeated the Eastwood junior varsity 2-1, Monday, Sept. 17. The Eagles grabbed the lead with a 15th-minute goal in the first half. Two minutes before halftime Eastwood was penalized for a high kick just beyond the penalty area. On the indirect kick that followed, Lucas Burnett put the ball in play, while midfielder Aaron Bontrager’s shot made it through the Eastwood wall of defenders for the score.

Throughout the second half, Darin Bontrager and Austin Short steadily applied pressure with a series of passing and shooting combinations. With six minutes remaining and the match still tied, Short outmaneuvered the Eagle defense to score, giving Archbold the 2-1 win.

The Streaks returned home Tuesday, Sept. 18, hosting the Pettisville JV. Archbold scored in the ninth minute when A. Bontrager knocked a penalty kick into the right side of the net after the Blackbirds were called for pushing in the penalty area. Eight minutes later, Burnett redirected a loose volley to score and give Archbold a 2-0 halftime lead.

Shortly after the break Burnett broke free and hit the left side of the net with his second goal. With 13 minutes remaining, A. Bontrager added his second goal with a score from the right side just beyond the penalty area, producing the 4-0 final.

The Streaks hosted the Swanton varsity, Thursday, Sept. 20. The teams battled through a scoreless first half before Burnett broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when he redirected a carom from Short into the goal. Five minutes later the Bulldogs were penalized for tripping inside the penalty area. A. Bontrager put the ensuing penalty kick high and into the right side of the net to seal the 2-0 victory.

The shutout was goalkeeper Marc Miller’s second straight and fifth of the season. Defenders Chandler Stevens, Brandon Wagner, Garrett Waidelich, and Josh Cuellar chipped in fine performances as well.
