Archbold School Officials Apologize After Fan Plants Flag On Indians’ Field After Win

Aaron Rex, Archbold School District superintendent, apologized for the behavior of AHS students and a Blue Streak fan who planted an Archbold flag in the center of the Wauseon football field.

Reports say that after Archbold defeated Wauseon 24-21, Friday night, Sept. 15, AHS students ran onto Harmon Field. At least one student, a boy, planted an Archbold school flag at midfield.

The move was similar to a Sept. 9 incident, in which Baker Mayfield, quarterback of the University of Oklahoma football team, attempted to plant an Oklahoma flag at midfield of Ohio Stadium after the Sooners defeated the Buckeyes 31-16.

Mayfield later apologized for his actions.

“On behalf of the school system, I apologize for our students’ behavior,” said Rex.

“I know our high school principal (Royal Short) has apologized to the high school principal at Wauseon. I was in contact with their superintendent after the game to let him know it wasn’t appropriate.”

Video

There is reportedly a video of the event that was posted on social media.

Rex confirmed he had seen the video, but does not have a copy.

Through the video, Archbold officials identified the boy involved.

“This student will be asked to apologize through a written letter to Wauseon Schools,” said Rex.

“There will be other consequences that Mr. Short will decide are appropriate.

“A meeting with the students will also take place to let them know what is appropriate behavior, or good sportsmanship.”

Short said in an email Monday afternoon, “I cannot share student discipline issues or consequences, as I am sure you understand.

“He (the student) is receiving further consequences above and beyond what Mr. Rex had shared.”

Short said he had not set a date or time for the student meeting.

Rex said while attending school events, students are expected to abide by the rules of the school “and are expected to represent their school in a positive way– good sportsmanship.”

Coach Speaks

Immediately following the game, Travis Cooper, WHS head coach, said, “The thing I’m most proud of our guys is when we win, we conduct ourselves with class, and so do our students.

“We didn’t go out on Archbold’s midfield and slam a flag on it, so that’s a horrible reflection on Archbold and their staff and their community.”

Rex said the flag-planting incident can be a teachable moment, “and we will be sure to use it as one.

“As you may have seen, this same situation took place at the Ohio State game a week ago.

“It is unfortunate that one of our students decided to emulate this behavior.

“Archbold has always been a place that has been known for class, and we have outstanding students and a wonderful community.

“This is an unfortunate incident and on behalf of our school district, I am sorry that it happened.

“We will be sure to correct this behavior and continue to teach our young people about good sportsmanship, character, and, also, winning and losing with class.”
