Archbold School Board Approves Contracts, Calendar Adjustments

The Archbold Area School Board went into executive session for almost an hour during its Monday night, Sept. 15, meeting.

Roxanne Burk, rural West Unity, asked to speak to the board regarding a playground duty position at Archbold Middle School. The board invited Mrs. Burk and several of her supporters into an executive session to discuss the classified contract.

No action was taken when the board returned.


Dorothy Lambert, elementary principal, reported that the breakfast program at the elementary was serving an average of 50 to 60 students per day.

She also provided class size figures: kindergarten 113, first grade 99, second grade 103, third grade 98, fourth grade 103.

In response to a question from the board, Lambert said the kindergarten averaged 100 students each of the last eight years.

Mike Pressler, middle school principal, announced that Grandparents Day is Friday, Oct. 10. Lambert and Pressler mentioned that the fall open houses were well attended.

Tim Meister, high school principal, gave several dates for special events. The middle school and high school will host assemblies on making good choices, Tuesday, Sept. 23.

The guidance department will host a breakfast for new AHS students, Friday, Sept. 26, and the Homecoming bonfi re is Thursday, Oct. 2. Adjustments to the Homecoming parade route and format are being made.

A band trip to Washington, D.C. is planned in the spring, around spring break.

David Deskins, district superintendent, told the board the Honeywell Emergency Notification System had been initiated. It will deliver notifi- cations to parents of students in the event of emergencies, as well as delay and cancellation information.

Deskins also gave an energy update and talked about spending reductions ordered by Ted Strickland, Ohio governor.


The board approved the 2008- 09 appropriations of $19.1 million, which includes $400,000 in grants.

Other items approved by the school board for the 2008-09 school year:

•increase in the “change” fund for Allan Gladieux, athletic director, to $1,000

•adjust school calendar with teacher in-service days. No school will be held Oct. 20, 2008, and March 2, 2009.

•contract with the Wood County Ohio Juvenile Detention Training & Rehabilitation Center

•Laura Bickel, Kristin Shields, and Jessica Badenhop are mentors for the entry-year teacher program

•classified substitute list

•supplemental contract for Mike Short as the marching band assistant

•Educational Service Center substitute teacher and paraprofessional lists

•Lisa Grisez, National Honor Society supplemental contract

•contract for Wendell Beck (math) and Linda Lauber (science) to serve as Ohio Graduation Test tutors

•accept the resignation of Sandy Babcock’s high school winter concessions manager

•contract for Michele Bagrowski, curriculum director, from Aug. 1, 2009, through July 30, 2012. Salary to be determined by the board.

All board members were present; all votes were unanimous.
