Michael A. Rocha, 41, Archbold, was found dead inside a car that was discovered in a water-filled ditch, Sunday, Jan. 13, an Ohio State Highway Patrol press release said.
Rocha was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Co. Rd. 15, along the Wauseon Reservoir.
Ricky Vitte, on OSHP sergeant, said a passerby spotted a small portion of a car bumper above the surface of the water and contacted authorities about 11 am.
Rescue crews and a wrecker pulled the car from the water.
Vitte said OSHP troopers do not know what time the car went into the water, nor whether Rocha died of injuries sustained in the crash or drowned. Rocha was not wearing a seat belt.
“We don’t know if it was late last night (Saturday, Jan. 12) or early this morning (Sunday, Jan. 13),” Vitte said.
There were no skid marks at the accident scene. Vitte said indications show the car, which was traveling south, drove off the left side of the road, went down the embankment, and overturned in the ditch.
Vitte said county officials told him water in the ditch was higher overnight, so the vehicle could have been fully submerged for some time.
In addition to OSHP troopers, Fulton County Sheriff deputies, Wauseon police officers, and Fulton County EMS units assisted at the crash site.
OSHP troopers are continuing the investigation.
