Archbold Holds Off Patriots, Tops Defiance

Holding a 38-25 lead to start the final eight minutes, the Archbold boys basketball team (8-7, 4-2 NWOAL) held off a late rally by Patrick Henry (2-9, 2-2 NWOAL) to win 47-43, Friday, Jan. 30 in The Thunderdome.

AHS led 10-6 after the first period and 30-19 at the midway point before holding off an 18-9 fourth-quarter rally by the visitors.

Archbold held a 38-21 lead late in the third period when PH’s Brandon Kerr and Kent Tietje hit three-pointers and Kasey Spence scored a conventional three-pointer.

The Patriots cut the difference to 45-43 with 2.9 seconds left, but Archbold’s Telly Fricke sealed the win with his 13th and 14th points of the game at the free-throw line.

David Rupp added 12 points, including two of the team’s five three-pointers.

Kent Tietje led the Pats with 16.

Archbold was 17/39 from the field for 44% and 8/18 from the foul line for 44%. PH was 12/33 from the field for 36% and 16/22 from the line for 73%.

The Streaks won the rebounding battle 28-25, and committed 15 turnovers to PH’s 16.

Streaks Knock Off Defiance

The Streaks knocked off Defi- ance, 49-34, Tuesday, Jan. 27, in a non-league contest in The Thunderdome.

Opening with a double-digit first-half lead, the Streaks held off a second-half rally by the Bulldogs.

Archbold led 17-7 after one and 27-15 to start the second half. Both squads had a sluggish third quarter; Defiance added eight points to its total, but the Streaks could manage only five. But AHS still led 32- 23 to start the final eight minutes.

Behind Telly Fricke’s 15 points, 12 of which were at the foul line, and Sam Miller’s 11, the Streaks outscored the Dogs 17-11 in the final stanza to register the win and drop Defiance to 8-4 on the season.

AHS hit seven treys in the contest. Miller hit three; Rupp, Fricke, Collin Walker, and Christian Goering each hit one.

Dace Kime paced Defiance with 12 points.

Archbold was 14/27 from the field for 52% and 14/21 from the foul line for 67%. Defiance was 13/37 from the field for 37% and 7/13 from the line for 54%.
