Archbold Earns Silver Healthy Ohio Healthy Community Award

The Village of Archbold has been named a silver-level Healthy Ohio Healthy Community by the State of Ohio.

The award recognizes the achievements of communities in implementing health-related policies and providing healthy community environments.

Rachel Kinsman, cardiovascular health educator for the Fulton County Department of Health, said communities seeking the award fill out a survey form.

“It deals with questions about the community, whether there are any health coalitions, what the schools are doing to promote physical activity and healthy food choices, whether the track is open to the public, whether there are bike paths, how are the sidewalks… what kind of opportunities are available to the public to be physically active,” she said.

Across Ohio, nine communities and two counties earned the Healthy Community Awards. At the Silver level, the winners were Archbold, the city of Worthington, and Ross and Vinton counties.

Napoleon and Defiance were gold-level winners, along with the city of Norwood, Orville, the city of Warren, and Westerville.

The village of Deshler received a bronze award.

Kinsman said Archbold’s application was completed by Mari Yoder, director of the Archbold Area Chamber of Commerce, and submitted by the Fulton County Heart Health Coalition.

Healthy Ohio is a multi-year, statewide health and wellness initiative of the Ohio Department of Health.

The initiative’s focus is to increase awareness of the importance of healthy lifestyles and to encourage Ohioans to exchange unhealthy habits for healthy ones.

Healthy Ohio’s goals are to increase physical activity, improve nutrition, and prevent tobacco use.
