Archbold Boys Soccer 2-1 After First Week



The Archbold boys varsity soccer team kicked off its inaugural season with two wins in its first three outings.

The Streaks hosted Toledo St. John’s Jesuit, Tuesday, Aug. 24. A Titan foul with 34:56 left in the first half gave Archbold midfielder Aaron Bontrager a free kick from 35 yards.

Bontrager’s kick bent into the upper right corner of the goal for the first-ever boys varsity score.

Nine minutes later, Archbold added to the lead when forward David Bontrager passed to forward Jarett Lerma for a goal at point blank range.

St. John’s regrouped at halftime and reeled off five unanswered goals to take a 5-2 victory. Nick Gramza had a hat trick for the visitors while Jeff Anderson chipped in the other two goals.

AHS 7, Fremont St. Joe 0

Archbold traveled to Fremont St. Joe, Thursday, Aug. 26, garnering a 7-0 win.

D. Bontrager, Lerma, and midfielder Adrian Ramirez each had two goals. A. Bontrager added one.

A. Bontrager notched two assists; midfielder Jacob Ott and forward T.J. Weirauch had one each.

Blue Streak goalie Jonny Lantz recorded three saves in the shutout.

AHS 2, Pettisville 1

Over 450 people packed Spengler Field when Pettisville visited Saturday, Aug 28 for a night game, adding another chapter to the two neighbors’ friendly sports rivalry.

Midfielder Philip Roth put the visitors on the scoreboard first with 13:46 remaining in the first half when his leftfooted corner kick from the right side hooked directly into the goal untouched.

Archbold responded three minutes later when Ramirez crossed a corner kick from the left to Lerma, who was waiting at the goal mouth, for the header score.

The teams battled evenly into the second half. With 25:28 remaining, A. Bontrager raced down the right side to the goal line before sending a low cross to D. Bontrager streaking through the middle, who knocked in the go-ahead goal.

The Streaks held on for a 2-1 victory, improving their record to 2-1. Pettisville dropped to 1-1-1.

Archbold won the junior varsity match 2-1.
