Annual Sunshine Benefit At Fairgrounds June 20-21

Seven years ago the Mennonite Central Committee and Sunshine Inc. of Northwest Ohio moved the annual benefit for the two organizations from Toledo to the Fulton County Fairgrounds.

This year it is Friday, June 20, 4-9 p.m., and Saturday, June 21, 7:30 a.m. to mid-afternoon. The main auction of quilts and furniture begins at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Each year, new features are added to the event, which raised $180,000 last year. The sponsoring organizations are affiliated with the Mennonite Church.

Handcrafted quilts and wood items are among the highlights of the event in the Orville Spangler Arena. A few items are sold during the preview Friday evening, which includes a silent auction.

The event also includes a 5K run/walk, oozeball tournament for young people, food stands, and several craftsmen from the area.

Penny Power, a fund-raiser for water projects in places like India and Vietnam, was added to the benefit several years ago. Guests may place pocket change in a large glass water jug that is towed around the fairground during the benefit.

There are three new stands for food this year. Included is a haystack meal, a layered Mexican dish on Friday evening; and Indian food and homemade kettle corn on Saturday. Several food stands including the beef and dairy associations and church groups return.

Feature Quilt

“Twisted Bargello,” the feature quilt, measures 115″x 96.” An undulating pattern of harvest colored fabric squares was quilted by supporters at Fairlawn Haven nursing home during recent months.

Other unusual items include an Allis Chalmers tractor donated by Dale Wyse and stained glass items from the estate of Orval Sauder.

An executive committee oversees the benefit. It is led by Ron Short, rural Archbold, who is a member of Central Mennonite Church.

The fairgrounds are located north of Wauseon, along the west side of St. Rt. 108.
