Animals At The Library

There are probably a thousand serious and logical reasons not to have cats, or any kind of pets, at the Archbold Community Library.

The discussion started when stray cat walked through the front door and made it known that the library was a fine place to live– stretching out on the desk of Sonya Huser, library director.

Why not keep it as the library cat? Huser ticked off reasons from who will care for the cat, what will happen when a library patron is allergic to cats, and who’s going to clean the litter box?

But there are reasons in favor of keeping the cat, too. Who could resist having a purring cat on their lap while looking at a magazine? Who doesn’t enjoy watching cat antics as they play with cat toys?

Plus, having a resident cat would generate interest in all things library and could provide teachable moments.

Dogs can have a place in a library as well. Specially trained dogs will lie still for hours while very young children “read” stories to them. Of course, the dogs don’t care about the story, but they’ll listen for hours while a child reads to them.

Dogs and cats in the library may be a “bad” idea, but it’s the best “bad” idea we’ve heard of in a while.
